Light taps on sides with Rubber mallet. Make sure all the case bolts on the underside are out as well. Then when loose firm pull, cause the magnetic pull is strong.83 GS1100ES rebuild:

It does look like all bolts are out from that picture but there is a very strong magnetic pull to the thing. I use plastic putty knives to separate the cover from the case and then work to pull them apart. Be sure your stator wiring is disconnected from the RR before pulling back too far and I would suggest the starter cover is off just to help guide the wiring through that area.Cowboy Up or Quit. - Run Free Lou and Rest in Peace

On some bikes wiring routes inside the starter motor well also. Remove the starter motor cover and feed the wire out the hole as you remove the stator cover.MY BIKES..1977 GS 750 B, 1978 GS 1000 C (X2)

There is a locating dowel behind the front top bolt (#15 in this schematic):
Which will make trying to move / dislodged the cover laterally quite difficult.
Like the others have said, the strong magnetic pull plus probably a bunch of goop / stuck gasket will make it stubborn to remove.Current:
Z1300A5 Locomotive (swapped my Intruder for it), GS450 Cafe Project (might never finish it....), XT500 Commuter (I know - it's a Yamaha )
Past:
VL1500 Intruder (swapped for Z1300), ZX9R Streetfighter (lets face it - too fast....), 1984 GSX750EF, 1984 GSX1100EF (AKA GS1150)
And a bunch of other crap Yamahas....

I gave a couple of taps with a heavy rubber mallet and was able to pull it right off. The magnet is pretty strong though so be prepared for some resistance. I taped around the entire perimeter. Just wanted to break the seal from the old gasket.
I refrain from sticking things between covers like knives of screwdrivers because the case and cover are aluminum and just a little gouge and that damn thing may leak forever. The gasket that goes here is paper thin.
Be sure to suss out your screws since at least on my bike there were a couple of different lengths and they need to go back that way.
