I have a 1986 suzuki gs550es. I recently got the bike and it looks like somebody got into the wiring harness. The first thing I would like to tackle is the gear indicator. The neutral light is correct, but when you put it into '1', '2' lights up, and as you cycle through the gears, it goes down. So basically, instead of 1-N-2-3-4-5-6, its 2-N-1-6-5-4-3. I do have a wiring diagram for the bike, but I'm not sure where the connector is, or where the sensor is for the matter. Where should I start looking? Could it be an issue with the sensor, or could be that someone messed with the wiring at the plug? Any help would be appreciated!

Gear indicator backwards?
Hello--
I have a 1986 suzuki gs550es. I recently got the bike and it looks like somebody got into the wiring harness. The first thing I would like to tackle is the gear indicator. I had the same thing happen to my 750ES after the shop replaced the indicator switch (the old one had a broken wire). They must have replaced it with an 1150 one or something because the lights didn't match up (like your problem).
Anyway, the connector was under the tank and I swapped the leads around in the connector until I got it to register correctly. If you take the sprocket cover off you will see the wiring and then follow it up until you find the connector.Current:
Z1300A5 Locomotive (swapped my Intruder for it), GS450 Cafe Project (might never finish it....), XT500 Commuter (I know - it's a Yamaha )
Past:
VL1500 Intruder (swapped for Z1300), ZX9R Streetfighter (lets face it - too fast....), 1984 GSX750EF, 1984 GSX1100EF (AKA GS1150)
And a bunch of other crap Yamahas....

Look at lower part of engine side, lower than the cyclinders, straight below, towards bottom of engine, ahead of the gear shift lever.
Is round, and includes the netural swtich although the wire for the netural is in a different connector from the 1-2-3-4-5 for some reason.
(I am speaking about the 1100G, which I I dont absolutoly know is same as ES.)http://webpages.charter.net/ddvrnr/GS850_1100_Emblems.jpg

If it isn't going to make it faster or safer it isn't worth doing
