Putting 18 pole stator on gs750 originally equipped with 12 pole stator

    Putting 18 pole stator on gs750 originally equipped with 12 pole stator

    I am thinking of doing this since the charging system on my '78 gs750 is barely adequate and still has the original regulator/rectifier and stator. Do the 18 poles charge better than the 12 poles? I realize I'd have to change out the rotor but I'd be happy to do that if It's a upgrade over a replacement 12 pole setup.

    I did it on my 77 GS750, with a 6 wire honda reg rec and AGM battery. With lights on anything over 2K revs and it shows 14.3 volts on the meter. I also have heated grips and no problems.
    My bikes 79 GS1000 1085 checked and approved by stator the GSR mascot and 77 GS750 with 850 top end, GS850g, and my eldest sons 78 GS550, youngest sons GS125. Project bike 79 GS1000N

      I recently discovered my bike has a 18 pole stator. I'm pretty sure it had been dropped on the left side so I'm guessing the stator cover and stator were damaged and the PO installed the newer stator and rotor

      It works fine for me...

        Supposedly they charge a little better, because they were used on any GS that did not have a kick starter.

          When changing from a 12 pole to an 18 pole on my 1978GS750EC, do I have to change anything else? (ie. rotor, regulator, rectifier)

            As hinted at in this thread, you’ll need the matching rotor designed for the 18 pole stator.... best to upgrade to a series r/r at same time.

              I actually did end up going this route about a year ago with a SH775 regulator/rectifier. While there I cleaned up my wiring as well. It charges beautifully now.
