5 volt aux power
Hi there, I'm looking for info on adding an aux power to charge my cell phone. '83 GS850. I'm sure this has been discussed before but i can't locate it, not sure what key words to use. Can anyone point me to a thread?Tags: None

There's tons of options out there on the interwebz for USB power. I run a dual port 12v outlet and use one of those plug in USB adapters to do my charging with. The 12v outlet is mounted to the bars next to my RAM XGRIP. Ran wire back to my aux fuse block and ground buss so I've got constant power. My little TW200 has a combonation unit that has one 12v outlet and dual 2 amp 5volt outlets under a small cover. That works really well and doesn't cost that much via Amazon.

It's better if you have it switched as they can put a drain on the battery if they are wired directly to the battery.
I have mine wired from the battery via an on/off switch on the Handle bars.
you can read more here https://www.thegsresources.com/_foru...5+volt+charger
you can tap off the bottom of ignition switch where the yellow wire is connected for the live (usb red wire) that will turn the unit on when you turn on the ignition and off when you take the key out pick up a good earth point for the black wireThe big guy up there rides a Suzuki (this I know)

You can also get one of those handlebar-mounted USB connectors with a built-in digital voltmeter.

Search Google or Amazon for "SAE USB" and you'll find craptons of these handy little widgets. I've got a couple that feature voltmeters.
On all my bikes, I have a two wire "SAE" plug (same as used by a battery maintainer) installed somewhere around the handlebars, run by a relayed circuit so it's on when the key is on, but draws power directly from the battery. Stir in a RAM phone mount, a 12 or 5 inch USB cable, a waterproof phone (Samsung S6 Active) and I'm all set.
There are also little USB outlets that have a bracket to mount to the handlebars and even waterproof covers. Poke around on t'intarwebz and you'll find plenty. Look for "marine" or "motorcycle" and they'll often be waterproof. Water resistant, anyway.
Burns Moto is probably the toughest, most waterproofest, skookumest setup around, but they're a little spendy.
