I'm confused on dyna systems please point me in the right direction.

I'm looking to replace ignitor module on 1982 suzuki gs650gl. Ive spent hours troubleshooting and the only thing I can figure is that little black box has finally given out. Everything else is fine as far as I can tell, when the harness to the ignitor is plugged in I'm only getting around .5-2 volts at either coil but when I unplug the harness the coils are almost sitting at 13. My only guess is the box is screwed since everything else checks out. I'm surfing ebay and see all these dyna systems that work for it seems every 550 up to 1000 but not one mentions anything about a 650. I really don't need coils or anything but if they come with a kit I'll take em. Someone please give me some links on e-bay or another reliable site that has exactly what I need or what other models of our bikes are interchangeable with the 650gl as far as ignition goes. I'm not too enthused in paying $100 or more for a 35 year old used ignitor so I figure I may as well take the plunge and never have to worry about this again with the dynatek system. Thanks in advance.

Further down this forum section in his other thread, he said that he ordered the dyna. What bike do you have? Put bike/ model/year in your signature for future reference?

You can swap the advancer out of an older model if needed if I recall. I believe I did this on an 82 GS850 engine years ago to install a Dyna-S.

Not to be argumentative but the dyna S worked perfectly fine on a 1982 gs650glz it had the electronic ignitor module but also had the mechanical advance under the points cover. The original signal generators under the points cover used the mechanical advance to signal the ignitor. Maybe my bike is the early 82 model I don't know but the dyna s works flawlessly.

The 650 are oddballs...used the same ignitor system from 81 to 83. Most of the 1982+ others ditched the mechanical advancer in favor of an ignitor with the advance curve built in.

Glad to hear that the dyna solved your problem.

Yes it solved it and many other problems I had that I didn't even realize stemmed from not getting enough spark. I'd recommend dyna s to anyone having issues with ignition. It's so much cheaper than buying used parts that may have been great back in the day but don't hold up to the performance we want now-a-days. After it was all said and done though I figured out I may not have needed the dyna afterall and my ignitor is probably fine. I had a break in the output wire coming from the killswitch which was held together just enough to allow 12v as long as there was no load on it. That's why I was having the 12v to 2v drop when I plugged in the ignitor. The break was inside the black insulation that is around all the wires coming from the killswitch so it wasn't easy to find. I only found it on accident lol.

Dan is saying you have to provide mechanical advance with the Dyna. Sounds like you did.

The dyna really can't improve performance beyond stock. Hotter coils can improve performance though that is noticeable.
