    GS450L dyna s fitment

Rebuilding a Gs 450L down to the frame and want to replace all of the electronic componentry but I’m a bit of a crossroads with the iginitor, and more so , it’s cost. If Its possible I would like to off set that cost by bypassing it all together and installing a dyna s, since I’m planning on replacing the pick-ups too, but I’m having a hard time finding a model that fits. Possibly the DS3-3C fits but can’t seem to find a definitive answer. At this point any info would help.

Your bike has 2 coils right? I would guess they fire separately instead of together. Do you have a pic of what it looks like under your points cover? What's the year model of the bike? I can't find any information as to the dyna s for a 450L. If the backing plate size and mounting points line up I don't see why a ds3-2 or ds3-1 wouldn't work I don't know though. I haven't looked under a points cover on a 450. I have a 650L and no one listed any models that would work for it either simply because the mounting plate has to be modified and a very small half moon cut out at the bottom in order to clear the oil light switch. The ds3-2 worked perfectly though after making that cut and hooking it up. Maybe you not being able to find anything is for a similar reason. Take a pic of what's under the points cover with and without the original plate installed if you can. Maybe someone else that's familiar with the 450 will come along and be able to let you know.

The DS3-3C will fit, however you need to get Dyna to provide the spacer they provide from one of their other kits for the larger models. I don't recall which kit is ships in now but they *should* know what you're talking about.

The kit is designed for the GS400's with points ignition, and the signal generator rotor on the 450 with transistorised ignition is shorter, which is why the spacer is needed.

Why do you want to replace all the electrical componentry? Wuffo? What year is the bike; electronic or mechanical advance?

You can also retrofit a GS500 ignition setup rather than going the Dyna S route which lets you keep the stock coils too if I recall correctly. That will give you electronic advance as well. I believe the latest GS500 models changed things somewhat so that might not be a straight swap, but I have no details on what changed and in what year I'm afraid... up to early 00's would definitely be good though.

One other thing I forgot to mention on the Dyna S is to closely check the clearance between the plate and the oil pressure switch when installed as you may need to notch a bit of clearance to ensure they don't touch or your oil light will permanently be on.

Thanks Pete! Thats great to hear. If you don’t mind another quick question. Do you have any idea why the ds33c is double the price as all the other dyna s? Coils included possibly?

                  Thanks again.

Yep, that's exactly the reason. The kits for the larger bikes don't include the coils.

I believe the reason they include the coils is again due to them being designed for the earlier points ignition models, meaning the coils from those aren't suited to use with the Dyna S due to having condensors. I may be wrong on that last point though...
