    Charging system redo

    My GS750E would not start after a 10 mile ride last fall. Made it home on two or three cylinders after a jump. Suspected charging system issues. SO- finally started diagnosing this spring.
    Using the charging system diagnostic guides on this site, found stator output at 30 volts AC.
    Ordered stator and regulator from DB electrical in Tennessee. Quick delivery and good fit.
    Replaced all wiring in charging system. Made direct to battery. Replaced starter cables, and negative cable. Increased cable size to 6 gauge. Left starter relay alone, as I saw no voltage across the terminals.

    Starts much easier due to starter spinning faster, hot or cold.
    Seems to run better also. Guessing the voltage was going lower than expected previously.
    I really believe hat a lot of charging and starting issues after parts replacement would be avoided by wiring upgrades at the same time as new parts.

    Time will tell as to the reliability of the DB Electrical parts, but today was a great ride.

    Next up=rear shocks.

    Should have said no voltage DROP across starter solenoid terminals.

      If you look in my signature there is a summary of how to maintain a GS charging system.
      Also the VAC measurement from the open loop stator measurement is proportional to RPM, so without knowing RPM it is had to deduce anything from your reported 30VAC measurement.

        That info is exactly what I used. Copied it off and had it by the bike.

          Glad it is working for you, you are correct that a large part of electrical problems has to do with poor connections. However, it is seldom recommended that you do a direct connection to the battery especially the positive side. What size fuse are you using? 20 or 25A? There is a description of the differences in battery connections in the same link.

            Well, I did forget something. Next project- Circuit protection.
            Will contact supplier for recommendation.
