cant find an aftermarket signal generator for a 1981 gs650, will one for a 750, 850 ect work on the 650?

That would depend on whether you have a chain or a shaft going to the rear wheel.
The chain-driven '81 650E shares a signal generator with the '80-'82 550, in all variations.
The shaft-driven '81 650G (and GL) have a unique generator that is only found on the 650 shafties.
