Turn the ignition key on, clicking coming from electrical area, cranks fine.
As the title says when the battery is turned on there is a fast paced clicking sound coming from the wiring area. It sounds like an old style electric fuel pump except I don't have one. The clicking doesn't stop when cranking and speeds up when I put a battery charger on. Checked all fuses and they're fine.

I haven't checked numbers as i don't own a multimeter but the starter spins pretty good, enough to fire off the engine and it doesn't sound uncharacteristically slow. Dealing with carb issues so i do drain the battery out after a while and that's why i hooked up the charger. There's no noticeable parasitic draw either.

You'll do well to get yourself even a cheap multimeter from Harbor Freight ( you can pick this one up for $6) as there will be a lot of other things you'll need it for on these old bikes.
Post up voltages for the key off, key on no crank, and crank. This will help to see if the battery is totally dead especially if you have drained it even a few timesCowboy Up or Quit. - Run Free Lou and Rest in Peace

Six bucks for a trouble light of ten for a basic multimeter, I've even seen HF coupons for a free multimeter from time to time. Get the multimeter, you'll need it eventually!1980 Yamaha XS1100G (Current bike)

While i try to figure out this multimeter i traced the clicking coming from this component. Pretty sure this battery is wasted based on how many times i drained it to nothing but it was never that good, maybe two or 3 seconds of cranking fast enough to ignite.
I assume this is the starter relay?

1982 gs1100G, 8 valve engine. It wasn't doing this when i first got it so i dunno. Oil pressure switch, and neutral light also do not work on the instrument cluster, only half the gear lights work. The bike doesn't physically have turn signals either. Spark is fine.Last edited by Guest; 03-18-2019, 08:22 PM.
