Fuel Gauge Adjustment
My fuel gauge always reads high (it shows 1/4 tank when its empty) and I really don't want to pull the sender out and bend the arm repeatedly until I get it close (its hard enough to get it in there once), so Im wondering if there is something in the gauge itself that I can adjust (a trim screw or something) or can I add a potentiometer somewhere in the wiring that I could adjust it or would it burn out?1982 GS1100E "Jolene"Tags: None

Remove it from the tank (you'll need a new gasket) and bend the float arm. You can plug it into the gauge & watch it as you move the float from full to empty. Most read the opposite. Empty when they're not (and the first half a tank always goes slower than the 2nd half although tank shape would have you believe it should be the other way...).
It's a simple potentiometer already. A contact tracks along a winding to vary resistance. It'll all make sense when you see it.

Thanks, I installed the one that's in it now and its a pain to get it in there. It's actually my second one (my 1st one died) and they both read too high. I was hoping there was way to adjust it with out removing it, bending it, installing it, trying it, removing it again, bending again.. lol1982 GS1100E "Jolene"

Sorry, removing, bending and re-installing is the only way.
It's not really all that hard. Just be aware that you can't just shove it in, you have to poke it in a bit, twist it just right, poke a bit more, twist the other way, etc. It's not all in the same direction. Just go slowly, feeling your way, it goes quite nicely. The first (couple of) time you do it, there is a LOT of frustration, which makes it SEEM a lot harder than it actually is. Take it slow, you'll be fine.
By the way, when I adjust a sending unit, I like to set it so the transition from the main part of the tank to REServe happens when the needle crosses from the white part of the gauge to the red. Others have their preferences, but I like to see when REServe is gonna happen.
