    gs1100e cdi unit replacement

been a while since ive been on the site, so long i had to reregister

im having an issue where it will just cut out and die and not want to restart

i replaced my battery, i already put in the relay ignition coil mod, so when it does start it kicks right off quick

i noticed that when i moved some wires at the connection the bike would die, i would loose all spark

the connection is for the ignitor cdi unit

I'm not sure if it is just the connections being an issue, or if the unit itself is failing, my next plan is to repin the connectors and see if that helps

if not, man those new ones are expensive, is there any alternative cdi unit for these bikes?

    thank you

The best thing you can do in the meantime is to remove "CDI" from your vocabulary.

There is no GS that was ever equipped with one.

Before you hit the "buy it now" button, go back to that "iffy" connector and clean/check all the wires. You might simply have a bad connection, no need to spend money when you don't need to.

a google search of the part number on the mod in question is what gave me the "cdi" name, what would you call it?

the connections are my first plan of attack that will be this weekends test, I will go from there

just wanted to have an idea of what replacement parts are out there for the module

I was seeing parts like that, I was looking for a module replacement without having to take other stuff off and trash it to replace the part which may be bad

You can download a service manual for you bike here...http://members.dslextreme.com/users/bikecliff/ Inside there is a description, including the name, of most parts on the bike. You can also use one of the various online OEM part sources like Partzilla.com to locate parts.

The OEM ignition system uses an ignitor which many people (wrongly) call a CDI. A CDI works on a totally different electrical principal and it most commonly used on dirt bikes. The factory ignition also uses a signal generator assembly which resembles points but it uses magnetic pickups instead. There are no aftermarket replacement parts for the OEM ignitor or signal generators. There is however a Dyna S system replaces both of these two elements. You can read more about it on the Dyna website if you get to that point.

Well it seems I lucked out
I put some temp connectors on, and I could not get it to die out, so I put some new connectors on and it seems good to go, took it for a 40 mile ride last night, no hiccups at all

Just because that's what everybody calls it does not mean that it's the right name.

As Nessism mentioned, Suzuki calls it an "ignitor", which is a bit confusing, since it does not "ignite" anything. It's basically just a box of transistors that replaces the older mechanical points.

It is unfortunate that some of the aftermarket companies were coming out with CDI (Capacitive Discharge Ignition) for cars about the same time. Everybody quickly got the notion that all electronic ignition systems were "CDI", whether they were or not. That is like pointing to a box of Posh Puffs tissues and asking "would you hand me one of those Kleenex, please?"
