Steve.
Did you rewire the charging system to bypass the stator loop and clean up excess resistance in the charging system path? With a SH775 and rewired system you may get the voltage up to a reasonable level.Ed
To measure is to know.

I rewired and got rid of that odd leg loop when I got the bike some 4 or 5 years ago. I picked up 1-1/2 volts, from battery reading only to 13.4 max. It still kept the battery up for years, but it suddenly went South. It's plenty old enough to need the upgrades, no sense in putting it off any longer. I'm surprised it lasted this long.

I have had good luck with Caltric stators, and they are cheaper than what I was offering in a re-wound unit.

Hand rewinding is tricky...Chinese have seemed to acquire the old jap machinery to do this.
I've considered scooping one of these eBay wonders as backup, but I have not had any charging issues since mounting the SH-775 six years ago, so I'm procrastinating !

That "eBay wonder" is a brand that I have never heard of (Celox), and is only a few bucks cheaper than the Caltric unit that I have used (with good results).

That is the correct one.
Your '81 bike has an 18-pole stator. The only bikes with 12-pole stators also had kick starters, which ended in 1979.

ElectoSport is a respected brand. Works for me. I actually found a ES stator on Amazon for much cheaper than direct from ES. Not sure why.Last edited by Rich82GS750TZ; 07-01-2019, 09:21 AM.Rich

I used to have a Caltric stator in my 850. While I was getting things ready for our "little ride" last year, I decided to start with a fresh stator. I replaced the Caltric with an Electrosport. Had problems just installing it. It was thinner, requiring shorter bolts to mount it to the cover. Once it was in and running, the output is not nearly as good as the Caltric that came out.
I am about to take the ES stator out and put another Caltric in. You interested in the ES stator?
