82' GS450TXZ needs a new harness.. pros and cons between centrifugal or digital ?
I want to replace the wiring harness(some wires are damaged/melted)on my 450TXZ so I've been looking for a suitable good condition used harness.I found a used harness in very good condition from an 85' 450L which also includes the ignitor CDi box for an excellent price.I will be installing it on my 82' 450txz and adapting the wiring to fit my ignitor and pulse generators with a plug-in set-up that will allow me to switch over to the new(83'+)style CDi ignitor and newer generation pulse generators(plug 'n play)when my stock ignitor finally gives up.Does the 83'+ system CDi box/pulse generators have as good of a performance advance curve as my 82' 450txz with it's original centrifugal advance stock system ?Last edited by grcamna2; 07-17-2019, 04:46 PM.Tags: None

I doubt it makes much of any difference. The early ignitor boxes tended to fail so maybe that points to the later as better though.Ed

Wild guess: the only difference is at the plug in, the older model having a cable, the newer with just the connector. Why not just install the newer "Ignitor Unit" along with the harness and make an adapter to plug in the old one if the newer one's a fail? Try the older one too with it's adapter.
It's true. We're all pretty vulnerable if we don't have a spare TCI box kicking around....so!
INFORM us if there's a difference between newer and older. I don't mind being wrong- you're the guy that'll know when both are tested....
The "CDI" thing is starting to bug me too. Why do you call it that? I hae mae doots. I sure don't know everything but both the suzukis mentioned have same-looking Signal generators and TCI boxes (Ignitor Unit) Neither model has the capacitor units or the separate hi-voltage coil and pulse generators under the flywheel that I see on Hondas that actually have CDI.Last edited by Gorminrider; 07-18-2019, 01:11 PM.

I will be careful to correctly hook up my 82' black box and 82' signal generators using a modified plug to hook up to the different color wires on my 83' wiring harness.
I like the performance/advance/power curve of my stock unit as it is now. When I first got my bike the timing was retarded and I lightly filed both sig gen plate mount holes and then set the timing on the F mark with the timing light and now it runs great.I'm curious if the timing can be set initially at the crank using the sig gen plate with the 85' system,or does the CDi box do the timing all by itself.
Can I change the timing setting as I can on my 82' ?Last edited by grcamna2; 07-20-2019, 09:40 PM.

The signal generators are the triggers. Advance them and the spark happens earlier, it doesn't matter how spark advance is managed.Ed
