Deleted Starter Now Bike Won’t Crank W/ Kickstart

I deleted the starter on my 1978 gs550 and plugged the hole, now when I put everything back together and tried to kickstart like I usually do, the kickstart just goes all the way down if doesn’t crank or turn the engine over, what piece am I missing to the puzzle fellow expertises?

No I am not holding the clutch in. I made sure I wasn’t doing that.

Did the kicker work before removing the starter? Maybe something was goofed with the kick starter all along... good luck.

I can't imagine what might have gone wrong, but I would like to ask what your motivation was to remove the starter?

I was just going to say put it back in. I'm guessing weight gain (loss)?

Sounds like something I would have done when I was 19. No offense intended.

Can you open the oil filler, get sight of the clutch basket and now push the kick down.
                Does the basket turn?
