    Stator fried?

    Oh boy, Don't you just love roadside breakdowns? My charging system seems to have gone out and I'm looking for some confirmation of my suspicions.

    Have a SH775 installed and an AGM battery that was fresh at the beginning of the year. Right now my voltage is at 12.1 with it at 11.9 with the engine running at 5k rpm. Checking the stator leads there's 0.4 ohms between them with no shorts. I'm getting about 35 volts AC between two of the three with one measuring 70 AC. At the positive output of the regulator it reads about 2.5v but the polarity is reversed!

    I'm about 10 miles from a shop where I might be able to order parts and guessing the stator is the culprit although I'm not ruling anything out at this point. If anyone can chime in I'd appreciate it!

    SHould have all three voltage readings of about 70vac. THat right there is enough evidence to condemn the stator and set you out on hunt for a replacement.
    Reading 4 ohms instead of zero ohm would make me suspect the meter more than the stator. If read infinite or thousands of ohms, then I would suspect the stator (if meter read zero with leads touching each other). I dont know if reading voltage of r/r output (disconnected from battery I assume) is a valid test of anything.
    But the 35-35-70vac voltage readings (at about 4k rpm, right) is a definite indication that something is fried, like insulation burnt off turns of the windings so windings are shorted to each other. Will look all black and crispy, I suspect.



    WHere is it you have gotten to by now in your travels? (someplace better than 45-50 degF and rainy, I suspect.)

      Looking at your readings from the stator I looks like two of the poles are faulty. It would be interesting to know did you fit a new stator when you fitted the sh775?
      Good luck with the repair let us know pls.

        When I installed my Compu-Fire R/R I knew my stator was most likely on the way out because of the dark color of the windings even though it was still charging and the numbers were good. One year almost to the day from the Series R/R installation it gave up. Previously dark insulation varnish on the windings were flaky and obviously burnt at that point. That it lasted that long was a testament on how easy a Series R/R is on the stator. Installed a new stator and many years later it is still functioning perfectly.

          Doesn't take much for a stator to short on itself or the core ....here's my previous stator from 6 years ago.. Voltage hovered all the time at about 12.5. Inspection showed a small fried area

            Thanks for everyone's confirming my suspicions. Never physically looked at the stator when the R/R went out due to it testing OK. Got lucky since I was able to get into town with a reasonably priced room about a quarter mile from an ATV shop that was open today. Won't be able to order a stator and gasket til Monday but should be able to get it Tuesday.

            I'm now in Sikeston, MO where it's sunny and 90°, left from Luzerne, MI a week ago and have been just north of Paducah, KY the last few days. Am heading a bit further west and have a line on a couple of places in the Branson, MO area to hold up for the winter.

                Don't know how many times in the last couple of years saying "I'm not doing another Michigan winter again!" Last winter was it, very little snow and temps down to -35°F had the water and sewer lines frozen solid for seven weeks. When the first of February came along we had seven feet of snow that month which brought the town up to average. The weekend before I left near the end of April we got right inches of snow. Screw that, never again!

                  We'll the new stator is in and charging! Really not that big a job and if I hadn't been such a cheapskate it should have already been done. Oh well, live and learn.
