    GS Colored Wires

Does anyone have a source for wire that matches the factory colors? I'm having to do some splicing and would love to have a source for when I decide to redo a significant amount of wiring. Thanks

When this has come up in the past, one very workable option is to trawl the depths of fleaBay for a wiring harness or two from just about any random GS model.

With a few beers' worth of cutting and picking tape you'll be able to salvage plenty of good wire in all the correct colors. They all pretty much used the same wire colors.

There are several detail differences in the connectors between earlier and later models, so you'll want to get as close as you can to your bike if that matters. Later models had far superior blade fuse fuseboxes, too.

While a used harness might be a good idea, it also stands a chance of being no better than what you have.

If you REALLY want new wire, check out Rhode Island Wiring Service. The link will take you straight to the wire page, but poke around a bit, they have connectors and tools, too.

True; you never quite know what you're going to get.

        A few other resources:

Vintage Connections is a great resource. They don't list many of the colors you'll find in a GS harness (like orange/white), but it might be worth emailing to see if they can get what you want:

No idea why these folks don't list wire, but they're a good resource for the other stuff. Might also be worth an email:
Cycle Terminal - We have Your wiring Needs. OEM Style Japanese Motorcycle Wiring Terminals and Connectors for Yamaha, Kawasaki, Suzuki and Honda Motorcycles, from the 60’s to the 90’s. Motorcycle electric products and accessories, Motorcycle Fuse Box's, Bullet Terminals, Spade Terminals and Connectors, Adhesive lined Dual wall Shrink tube, Headlight Relay Kits, Horn Relay Kits, Auxiliary Lighting Kits, Accessory Relay Kits, and more.

Scroll down for wire. They have orange/white
Electrical Terminals plugs wires and connector for Japanese Bikes in CRC2's Online Catalog of New motorcycle Parts and Accessories Indy

Also, it's worth noting that Japanese wire gauges are metric, not American (AWG), so you're never going to make an exact match using AWG wire.

It can be very difficult to get true metric wire in the US of A, so most of us just get as close as we can, erring on the side of a little larger (18AWG works for many wires you'll find in a GS. Some things need 16. 8 or 6 for making battery cables).

Another source I had stashed in my bookmarks. These folks seem to have a lot more colors/stripes. Still all AWG, not metric.

I converted a 1000G harness into a 1000S harness using color coded splices off a scrap old GS harness. Suzuki standardized color codes for different systems across models so if you get one harness there is a very good chance it will have some wire lengths for the colors you need.

I just took a look at that site. Nice selection, but you have to poke around a bit to shop intelligently.

A 25' hunk of 18 ga. wire will cost $19.25. A bit high, but poking around a bit, I find that a 50' hunk of that same wire will only cost $3 more. Still just over 50 cents per foot, but a LOT more affordable.

Z-1 Enterprises have a good selection of wires, connectors and specialty tools available for the Japanese bikes.
