1100 ex dosen't rev above 6000 rpm
Hi peeps, after a year or so now, i'm still trying to get the bike to reach high revs. Carbs have been cleaned and checked many times, new induction rubbers, diaphragms, float seats and valves, wiring and ignition checked etc, etc. Still the same. Researching on here, i came across someone with the same problem who eventually discovered the R/R was the problem, mine checked out ok, but could the ignition be running out of sparks at high revs because the R/R is breaking down ? After many hours of trying to find the fault, not to mention the cost, { carb parts, complete ignition change etc } could this be the problem ? Any thoughts, before i take the bike into the yard and burn it. Thanks for any advice.Tags: None

I say that because I just worked on a 550 that has been having problems for about a year. In Neutral, it would rev to redline easily. In first gear, it would get to about 8000 RPM. Second gear would get to about 6500 RPM. Third through sixth gears, nothing over 6000 RPM. On a 550, 6000 RPM will get you around 60 MPH, and it won't get there very quickly.
After verifying valve adjustment, cam timing and ignition timing (all good ), I took the carbs out to see what I could find. Removed all the diaphragms, checking for easy movement and no holes in the rubber. Removed the float bowls. All was fine until I got to #4. There was no main jet.
When I had turned the carbs over to remove the bowls, it had rolled into the vent space over the floats, so I did not see it until I turned the carbs back upright. I went ahead and verified the pilot jets and passages were open, then re-assembled everything properly.
I am happy to say that the test ride was VERY rewarding.

Something to try since I was have similar issue of not being able to rev in neutral or when under load. On mine started running perfect after removing the air cleaner cover. I'm guessing when the slides opened I was to rich and choke the engine out. Now I gave it more air and runs really good. 82 gs1100e 4 into 1 pipe stock other wise but I up the main thinking I was too lean start with.
