Looking for a brand new harness for a 39 year-old motorcycle? ...gee. Good luck. What's wrong with the one that came with the bike?

Wiring melted because of a worn wire that shorted....

Ah so. Well, a 39 year old harness on my bikes is still flexible and good. Being under the tank and seat preserves it...so a replacement from the scrapyard or ebay will be it..but be of course, be careful to get a decent match. It might help to look at a parts fiche to see what other bikes might use the same harness- the previous year, a slightly different model, a GS850? etc. An L like yours MIGHT have a different length to the handlebar switches...
start here , but be sure you really have a "1981 GS1000GL". If they call it something else, check the handlebars and seat for a visible match.

be sure to click the name on the parts list- it will tell you which bikes use the same part.

UNLESS you want to fix the one you have.
of course This'll work(I have a bike that came with the same problem) but keeping the colour code of the wiring if there's a lot burned, gets pricey....one or two is not so bad and I would choose repair vs spare. Rewrapped, no-one will know except you.

How bad. Do you have photos?

I've repaired many a burnt/cut/damaged harness. Often easier than finding, and replacing, the original.
