Safe To Weld?
The front chain guard bracket broke off the swingarm on my '80 GS750L. I want to weld it back on. Is it safe to weld on the bike and not harm any electrical systems? I've read on various sites that I would just need to disconnect the battery. Can anyone confirm this? Thanks.

Disconnect the battery. Ground your welder to the swingarm. You do not want welding current travelling through bearings, pins, bolts screws, engine casings etc, as this causes internal arcing and invisible damage to other components. If its an aluminum swingarm, polish a piece of the swing arm in a non visible spot to ensure that the ground contact point will not mar the surface by arcing through dirt or corrosion. On a steel swingarm, remove paint where you will place the ground as paint is an insulator.1983 GS1100E, 1986 GS1150EF
