1982 GS750T - Front Sprocket Cover

When I took the sprocket cover off, I thought I'd discovered the motherload of crud.

Looking at other covers, this 'spongy' mass seems normal.

But it's very dirty.

So...

...How do you clean it?

My usual method of cleaning involves a degreaser, Scotchbrite, a brass brush, and plenty of elbow grease.

But if I use this on the spongy stuff, I will end up ripping it all off.

Does that matter?

Scrape out the worst of the muck, then forget you saw it, delete all the pictures, and put it back on. No one will ever know. Polish the outside if it makes you feel better. Sometimes you can actually polish a turd. Mine looks the same. Thanks for reminding me.

The foam was used to deaden the sound of the front sprocket but it does a better job of soaking up chain lube and looking like crap! It isn't really needed and it just adds weight as the foam collects all that chain lube. The sprocket case is easier to keep clean without the foam and you will never notice the missing foam unless you get creative with the sprocket case.
