    80 GS1000, oil

1980 GS1000, Any suggestions on oil for slightly notchy shifting. Thanks Chuck

In all seriousness, anything that has the JASO MA rating, important for use with wet clutches. Rotella T4 is commonly used. Cheap and it works. Your notchiness may have nothing to do with your oil selection. Prepare for many more opinions, or none. This topic could go either way.

Notchy shifting could be related to a dragging clutch. If you struggle to find neutral, that's another sign.

Diesel oils are popular in motorcycles. It's cheap. Or, get some quality motorcycle oil. M1 10W-40 motorcycle oil is excellent.

I'd stay away from synthetic oils for these older motorcycles.
synthetic oils will just seep right through the gaskets...
          Ask me how I know.
