In all seriousness, anything that has the JASO MA rating, important for use with wet clutches. Rotella T4 is commonly used. Cheap and it works. Your notchiness may have nothing to do with your oil selection. Prepare for many more opinions, or none. This topic could go either way.

Notchy shifting could be related to a dragging clutch. If you struggle to find neutral, that's another sign.
Diesel oils are popular in motorcycles. It's cheap. Or, get some quality motorcycle oil. M1 10W-40 motorcycle oil is excellent.Ed

I'd stay away from synthetic oils for these older motorcycles.
synthetic oils will just seep right through the gaskets...

2016 XL883L sigpic Two-tone blue and white. Almost 42 hp! Status: destroyed, now owned by the insurance company. The hole in my memory starts an hour before the accident and ends 24 hours after.
