    Gasket material

Do Auto parts stores carry sheets of gasket material. If not, where can you find it. Thanks, Jim M

Yes, they do, several different materials, several thicknesses.

I got mine at AutoZone. It came in two thicknesses, and came in a roll, which was a PITA. I had to put some books on it to flatten it out.

Posterboard from a craft store works also & it is already flat. This is a TEMPORARY fix! Ray.

I made a transmission gasket for an Opel GT out of a Cherios box, a long long time ago.
Many years later, I bought a dead Opel Manta for parts, took the transmission apart, there was my old Cherios gasket.

          It hadn't leaked.

Thanks. I'm buying a new valve cover gasket and thought I might try to copy it to have a spare. I figure the homemade gaskets should be okay for clutch and stator covers. Is using this for a valve cover likely to be okay. Also, what thickness is appropriate for a valve cover?

I've cut out all kinds of gaskets before, but wouldn't want to do a valve cover due to the complexity and thin sections. If you watch on ebay OE gaskets come up regularly, and often times you can pick them up for cheap.
