        That is just a round plastic cap.
        I could not keep them on my 650G either.
        And they are behind the riders foot, and not at all like what he described he saw.

        I am suspecting that what was seen was some random thing that was laying in the road.
        If it was just about anything from you bike, and would notice that something wasnt working any more.

          If your talking about that straight hairline mark on the carb boot, I believe that's just a molding mark from the factory, not an actual crack.
          I have the exact same thing in my 650 boots as well, and they definitely are not cracked in any way.
