Agreed -- looks more like an 1100G valve cover gasket. That's the only one with that bolt on the left side of the cam chain tunnel in front.1983 GS850G, Cosmos Blue.

1100G valve cover gasket
PS - AJ at http://stores.ebay.ca/ajjohnson6 in Michigan, who sells Suzuki and Yamaha parts, has cheerfully and promptly refunded my payment in full and says to not bother returning the gasket. Three cheers for honour and integrity on ebay.
