I bought my first motorcycle (1981 GS450T) and love it! I was reading my repair manual and was about to clean the oil strainer but noticed that Suzuki bond #4 is not available in my area. I picked up a bottle of permitex Indian head gasket sealer and am curious if it is a viaable replacement for the Suzuki bond when used on the crankcase and sump cover mating surfaces. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Permitex for Oil strainer cleaning
Hi everyone,

I would not use Indian head gasket sealer on the strainer. Yamabond, Suzuki bond, Hondabond are all made by the same company, I think they are called Threebond and the version is 1194.

One thing... why are you using sealant at all? A new gasket should be all you need.
Of course, if you're using a Haynes manual then it says use sealant in addition to a gasket, but the Haynes is a dodgy manual I will never trust again.
I can assure you that when I pulled my sump cover off, there was only a gasket there from the factory, there was no sealant at all.
Oh, and welcome, nice to see another 450 here1982 GS450E - The Wee Beastie

Yeh, I've got a Haynes manual, figured I'd pick one up because the only engine I have a clue about is the 55hp Johnson on my fishing boat. Good to know though! I didnt even think there was a gasket in there, cant wait to get my oil filter in the mail, I'll be sure to give you guys a heads up on how it works after I change it.

Do yourself a favour, and while you're waiting, look around Amazon for the Clymer manual, you won't regret it.
If you get to a point of torqueing up bolts, at least one torque measurement in the Haynes is listed as twice what it should be, and I stripped the thread for the bolt that holds the gear shift detent plunger arm and had to repair it.
And yes, update us with how you go and some pic's would be good too1982 GS450E - The Wee Beastie

Looks like the 2nd one down in the middle column would work for that bike.1983 GS 1100 Guided Laser

I find working on my motorcycle mildly therapeutic when I'm not cursing.

Well folks I started on the oil busyness and man was it messy! As of now the bike has brand new Mobil 1 in it and seems to like it a whole lot better than the seemingly stock oil that was in it. I took lots of pics of the work that I did today, seat repair, dent repair (tons of bondo!) and now polishing all of the spent aluminum parts! I think a new thread is in order for those though, would hate to get ooc

The disgusting old oil that came out of my baby..My camera didn't do the chunky texture of the oil justice in this picture.
The nice new stuff that went in
