    Valve seals

    I am rebuilding a 81 GS1100.

I have a good head that came off a low mileage rebuilt engine, but the PO had it running a little to rich and it is carboned and gunked up.

I just want to clean/lap the valves do I need to replace the valve seals or are they reusable.

I struggled with the same question last year on my '81 1100E when I had the head off to replace the head gasket.

I ended up replacing the valve seals (aftermarket from Z1), rings, base & head gaskets, honed the cylinders & lapped the valves after wirebrushing all the carbon off.

I figured as long as I was in there I might as well do it all - adds more $ and time, but the peace of mind is worth it.

What he said. One tends to get a case of the "might as well" or "easier to do it now, then later" when redoing one of these bikes.......

Okay just ordered new seals, I guess you are right I have redone every other nut and bolt on the darn thing. I guess after a while and so much money you start to think "do I really need this???"

While the head is off it's highly recommended to replace the base gasket and any O-rings that might be underneath the cylinder. A leakage on these parts means you are going to have to pull the head off again, and head gaskets are expensive.

Everything going back to together is either new, refurbished, or heavily modified....thinking back now I dont even know why I asked.....I guess I was having a momentary relapse of being a cheap azz!
I havent posted in a while and I will update on my build in a while after I start bolting some more stuff together

So you are throwing on a fuel injection system? How well does that work with these old bikes? Does it have a computer system or something to throw in there too?
