I would hate to get them the wrong size and have to send it back and play some kind of mail tag with them. If anyone would like to take a look at the link that Ranger provided and give me some answers that sure would be solid of you.
there's a link to the afx sizing chart that shows the sizes in cm, inches and "hat size"

size is measured around the head just above the ears and around the forehead. if you are unsure go to a dealer and get them to try the helmets on to get the right size, then order online

For the prices you can get a new one for in the sales I wouldn't buy used.... Different matter if a trusted friend or someone well known on here gave/sold me one.

Key differences between cheap and expensive helmets seem to be removable pads... (daughters so must be clean girls right?? ) wind noise (teach them to wear ear plugs) and weight. Weight diff is never that much and it won't take them long to build any extra muscle needed..

Measure around their head, forehead to the back keeping it level or to the furthest part of their head behind the forehead.

Heres off AFX website which I went off when ordering my own helmet and hers but we did it with those paper type tape measures that tailors use.

Determine the circumference of the widest part of your head by using a flexible tape measure. Generally, the widest part of a person's head is the area 2.5cm (1") above the eyes and ears. However, we suggest measuring at a few points both above and below that line to determine the greatest measurement before referring to our size tables. No helmet can provide protection if it's too uncomfortable to wear.
            And compare to this. http://www.bikebandit.com/assets/dig...AFXHelmets.gif

Optically-correct, compound-curved, scratch-resistant, UV-treated, flush-fit face shield. Removable cheek pads. Ample ear cavity for speakers
Out of a $25 helmet, can't beat that. Same stuff they use in their $200 helmets just a different shell and different weight

One other factor that I have not seen mentioned yet is head SHAPE.

Some helmets are more rounded, others are more oval. This will make a big difference in comfort and protection.

If possible, go to a bike shop to try on several different brands. This will give you an idea which brands will fit. Then look for that brand on the internet and find your best price.

Depends on the price of used. As others said, there are some cheaper new helmets both in stores (Walmart) and online. If you can get new for $50 or so, used would jhave to be like 50% of that for me.

Depending on the age (of helmet and kid) newer may offer lighter helmet for kids than an adult small.

                    just options.

I'll admit that I have a couple of used helmets on the shelf for occasional guest passenger use.

Helmets in smaller "ladies" sizes (XS, S, M) are almost always virtually unused.

With that said, if it's someone who will be riding with you often, then yeah, it's well worth trying on many different helmets and finding one that fits well and looks good.

My wife and I scoured the earth looking for a non-pink helmet that would match her prized baby-blue jacket -- we finally found a nice comfy Gmax GM68 at the Chicago motorcycle show for $90.
