valve cover and tachometer cable?

on my 19080 gs550e, theres a cable that goes into the top of the valve cover. im about to remove the valve cover to do the clearance check. what do i do with this cable??? do i disconnect it from the valve cover before removing the valve cover?

i hope theres no surprises as i remove it. springs falling out or something. i would not know how to reassemble it.

Hi,

Just screw the cable out. The gear assembly will stay in place.

There is a guide on Mr. bwringer's website that explains how to replace the seals when the tach cable gear starts leaking. On the 850 the gear is in the head, on your bike the gear is in the cover, but it's the same principle.

wow, that is excellent istructions! thanks so much. im going to take a lot of pics and a friend is gonna video the valve check. id like to post it here for others to benefit from. when i get it done, ill contact the administration on directions for posting.

Probably the worst that might happen is if the inner core slides out. Just slide it back in.

In fact, when I put the cable back together, I will slide the core out a bit to ensure that it engages the drive properly. It is much more forgiving at the upper end.

You should unscrew the cable, then remove the tack drive phillips screw and the keeper, then pull or gently pry out the entire tach drive. It's a worm gear, and it's engaged with the cam (on top). It has an o-ring oil seal. It will be easier to remove and reinstall the valve cover with the tach drive removed.
