Thanks again for the help everybody! here's a link to my blog post with some pics:

AS you can tell, those bearings were toast. I'll share some pictures of the Jaguar shop I stopped by, very interesting images!

I just happened to read this thread and thought I'd add a suggestion for the next time someone has to remove wheelbearings. I found a piece of rebar available at any hardware Home Depot kinda place, cut to about 2' long works great for driving out the old bearing. Worked great for me.

Common sense has become so uncommon that I consider it a super power.

The easiest way is with a blind hole bearing puller.
Harbor Freight has them kinda cheap.

Did the concrete anchor method last week, got 3/8 size and next size up. Put sleave from larger one and slipped it over 3/8 size, had no problem tightening it down and knocking it out. terrylee

I'm no long time motorcycle mechanic but have chanegs out about 3-4 sets of bearings and this is really all of the specialized tools you need to get them out (other than a hammer)

To reinstall, you can use an old brearing to gently tap the new bearing in being very careful; to get it going in straight. At the end you will start to drive the old bearing in on top of the new, so I sometimes switch to a oversize socket (dont hit the center). I have never needed to heat the wheel.

Found this thread while working on my own GS650. Anyway, I first tried the spreader bolt thing, but it didn't work, couldn't get a tight enough fit, even with a spacer.

So I used Autozone's tool rental deal and got a "Blind Hole Puller Set" #27128 which is basically the slide hammer thing. Worked like a charm!

May I please confirm that I do not need to put any grease on the bearings before inserting the new ones? I just need to insert one side, the spacer and races I took out, and then the opposite side bearing?

                Thanks.

On Edit: I know the bearings are pre-lubed internally I just want to make sure I don't add anything on the outsides before insertion.

From all the other threads I read, even if it is one of the bearings that only has a grease seal on one side, you don't need to add grease. One problem is that if you add an incompatible grease, it could break down and you'd make things worse.

If there is a grease seal on both sides of the new bearings, then for sure don't add anything! Leave those seals alone!
