Can I put a new tube in and ride it if it's just a screw through it or have I got to change it?

you are going to remove the screw eh?
I once used a can of tire inflater on a rear tire that picked up a long wood screw. It got me home.
Of course this will start an endless debate on the relative safety of doing anything but getting a new tire.

It's an old mag wheel... No shoulder for tubeless.
This went at 75 on the freeway and wasn't all that bad. Tyre stayed in place etc so maybe my stay with tubes decision wasnt so bad.
I'll go tubeless with more modern wheels...
Not sure if it was a screw or what... Had it towed home, swapped bikes and started out on the trip again... Will investigate more when I get home.1980 GS1000G - Sold

I have Bob. I know the theory on how to "convert" etc but call me old fashioned I guess!!
I have some later tubeless wheels I intend to run in the future.... This tyre has 3-4k miles left on it at least so I didn't want to have to junk it if not necessary (plus I'd like the bike back on the road asap rather than waiting for a tyre) but no big deal if I gotta replace it...1980 GS1000G - Sold

That's the advantage of tubes
You can even patch the tube
I don't know why so many people dislike tubes, I've never had an issue in 40+ years of riding1978 GS 1000 (since new)

Well I investigated further last night... it was a tiny tack, must be all of 2mm diameter & about 3/4" long!
Given the size & the fact that it is only about 10mm left of centre of the tyre I'm going to put a patch on the inside. Tubes are about 3 years old & I think I have a new one on the shelf so maybe I'll use that, might patch the old one for a "spare on the shelf".
I think Tubeless is the way to go with no centre stand... there was no way I could repair this at the side of the road but I could have plugged it...1980 GS1000G - Sold
