FUBAR Maybe?
You wouldn`t think a simple thing like an oil change would end up so catastrophic but it seems it has. To make a long story short the oil filter cover. I got it off fine. Installed the new filter and rubber seal. Started to put the 3 acorn nuts back on. They went on easy enough. Started the bike and oil was gushing from the oil filter cover. Started to remove and the first 2 nuts cam off fine. The third 1 just spins. Won`t get tight and won`t come off. Just turns. Can`t tell if the nut is stripped or the stud is FUBAR. Help! It`s finally 70 degrees and I want to ride. Any suggestions?sigpic1981 gs1000G Black

Get a pair of vice grips and grab the nut....pull away from the engine while you spin it.
Start there.

And once again I bow to the all powerful GS gods. Vise grips and channel locks wouldn`t fit bbut a pair of long needle nose did the trick. I`m off now to the hardware store to see if I can get a couple of new nuts and a new stud just in case. Anyone know how long the studs for the oil filter cap are? I`m going to take a good acorn nut with but if they don`t have an acorn will a nut of the same size with new washers do?sigpic1981 gs1000G Black

Yeah, normal nuts will do fine, it does not have to be an acorn nut.
maybe pull the studs out and put some good strong locktite on the threads and screw them back into the motor, to avoid a repeat somewhere down the line.
Don't over tighten the nuts, it is not nessasary.

Same thing happened to me the last oil change I did. I was able to replace the stud and the nut with hardware store stuff. It's not the end of the world. If you really cant find what you want try McMaster Carr. They have just about every type of hardware imaginable, and ship everywhere.

Agian. Thanks to everyone. I found the part no. for the stud in my parts manual but it doesn`t have the size. I`ll try checking the fiche online now. Don`t want to run out of daylight.sigpic1981 gs1000G Black

Hello again all. EUREKA! Suzi and I are on the road again. The local Ace hardware had everything I needed. Got new studs, new washers and nuts. Problem solved. Just wanted to say thanks again for all the assistance. I the advice from the site and changed the oil with Rotella T 15-40 and am on my way out for a quick test ride. Again thanks to all. Rubber side down. Shiney side UP!
