All three with the same issue
I'm really glad I found this thread because I'm dealing with all three acorn nuts being stripped right now! (1979 GS750E) I took all of them out, put in the new oil filter and then as I was tightening them I felt them start to get looser...not a good sign. I didn't know how far to tighten them and when my husband suggested that I must have just settled the cap and that is why they were all turning so well, so I just kept cranking away. Ugh. I'll go back out and try the needle nosed pliers to see if that gets me anywhere. I had been pulling with regular pliers but to no avail yet. At least the days are pretty rainy right now so I'm not too tempted to ride.

as much as youll be removing that bolts for oil changes, you need to be aware that the STEEL from the bolt is gonna be abrasive to the softer aluminum cases. AND if you cross thread that bolt just once your into having to retap the hole and a p[ossible oil leak situation. I would restud it and go with a flat washer and nut.MY BIKES..1977 GS 750 B, 1978 GS 1000 C (X2)
1978 GS 1000 E, 1979 GS 1000 S, 1973 Yamaha TX 750, 1977 Kawasaki KZ 650B1, 1975 Honda GL1000 Goldwing, 1983 CB 650SC Nighthawk, 1972 Honda CB 350K4, 74 Honda CB550
NEVER SNEAK UP ON A SLEEPING DOG..NOT EVEN YOUR OWN.
I would rather trust my bike to a "QUACK" that KNOWS how to fix it rather than a book worm that THINKS HE KNOWS how to fix it.

Been there, done that too!
Ran out to Lowes and got some new nuts.
I ran like 2 or 3 nuts on each bolt....and that temporarily fixed it.
(the threading was toast, but only on some small spots.)
Eventually I had to goto the Suzuki shop, and buy new studs......
I think they costed like $3 total?
----
To remove the Old Studs.....hit the base with some Oil, and let it sit.
Then grab some pliers or vice grips, and Twist!
They'll come out....just gotta get some leverage.
When you place the New ones in....I think you're supposed to Lock-tite 'em? a tad.
But when you're running the new studs in....do it SLOWLY....it takes time.
The bolt will probably start to Tighten and offer some resistance eventually, even though it's not nearly 100% in.......then you gotta get creative and use something Soft, yet with Gripping power.
(so you don't ruin the new threads!)
I made the stupid mistake of wrapping my vice grips in electrical tape......it Worked good, but I managed to scar up the tips of the threading.
But they still accepted the new Nuts perfectly fine......Last edited by Guest; 05-20-2011, 06:13 PM.

Didn't think of that
The steel bolts slowly eating away at the aluminum case. Just changed my filter on my 700EF and it has two bolts and a nut. Does this mean that someone probably did the same thing at some time and put bolts in instead of stud and nut? Gonna check out my manual and see what's in there.....
