Redrilling Fuel Tank Holes
While attempting to reinstall the petcock into the tank tonight, I noticed one of the screw holes is stripped. Based on the parts fiche, that hole fit a 6mm screw. If I try to retap it to fit a larger screw, what is the easiest way to prevent any shavings from getting inside the tank besides using oil/grease on the tap?Cowboy Up or Quit. - Run Free Lou and Rest in Peace

Grease on the tap and do the tapping with the petcock holes facing down, that way any chips will drop down due to gravity.Ed

So basically try to go from underneath it. Okay, thanks. I'll head by Ace on Thursday (have a class team meeting after work tomorrow) with the tank to figure out what size I'm going to. I think I can do a 7mm but I'm not positive.Cowboy Up or Quit. - Run Free Lou and Rest in Peace

Before running a tap in there Scott, make sure to get the appropriate sized drill bit. Another option is a helicoil to the original size (this is what I'd do).Ed

Woo Hoo
Woo HooI found the correct old bolt for the petcock and wouldn't you know it but it actually went in just fine. So I guess I'll be taking the old ones back and I'll find out what the thread pitch is for this one.
It was sitting on one of my downstairs tables that I didn't see earlier. Picked it up, tried it out and my petcock is on. Too bad it's supposed to rain pretty good tomorrow or else I would put the tank on the bike and ride to work.
Now, why couldn't I have found it last night when I was looking for it or even tonight before it got dark when I thought I stripped the hole out.Cowboy Up or Quit. - Run Free Lou and Rest in Peace

Nice find. I don't think you can get a 7mm screw/bolt at Ace. I've looked and the sizes go from 6mm to 8mm. and I've looked at a few different hardware stores too.
Anyways, you found a size screw that fits.1979 GS850G

Yea, normally I keep the screws with the parts that I take off. I think it fell out though when I was moving the petcock from the bar area to the table and then to a box. I thought I'd lost it so I got replacement 6mm (based on the parts fiche) but they didn't fit right.
It just means I can finally start the bike back up tonight for the first time since November.Cowboy Up or Quit. - Run Free Lou and Rest in Peace
