    Balancing spoked Wheels

    Been looking into this.... What's the recommended? These wheels are for my "foreigner" KLR so there is a chance of some off-road action.

    Currently it has a "crimp on" type around the spoke to balance.....

    My options seem to be:

    3. Re-usable (set screw) also go on the spoke. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/REUSA...Q5fAccessories

    I'm leaning towards re-usable for obvious reasons but a little worried they might either come off or damage the nipple when clamped....

    I always go for crimp on lead weights (they don't look like the ones in the Ebay ad though). They are reusable - you just pry them apart with a flat screwdriver to take them off and as long as you aren't rough they don't get messed up. A doddle to use as well.

      crimp ones will/are the best if there lead. Easy as to do and wont fall off. Once again go to the breaker/wreckers and get some off the wheels they have there if there willng to sell you them. The KLR hasnt a rimlock has it? If so just give up on the balance job right now. And those balance beads are useless. I worked is a tyre place for 18 yrs and there just a gimick, DONT care what other people say in here, Sorry guys

        Don't think I can get lead in California. Maybe I'll give those ones with the grub screw a try.

        Any big disadvantage to using stick-ons with spokes? I have some of those...

          No church roof local? That or gut a swan (yeugh).

          Stick-ons will work fine.

                So no new trail bikes come out with lead weights then? No disavantage with sticking weights on the rim as its further from the centre and will need less. With those screw type if you need more than one try sliding the first on closer to the centre for less effect. FYI they look like barnicals i reckon. Just had a look, those "crimpon" weights arent crimpon there knock on and get push over the nipple for a tight fit. Cant believe using steel weights, look wrong with that many on a wheel

                  I think they're a zinc coated steel like the stick on ones... Don't seem very readily available

                  My only concern with stick on weights is that I wasn't 100% how they would work off road...?? - no experience

                    If you get the good cloth/100mph tape run a layer of that over the stickon weights for added security. For race bikes we put tape on first then weight then tape covering all the weight and more. That way when they came back in in two weeks wasnt a problem trying to get the glue from the weights off the rim. And we had heaps of colours for matching the rims.

                      Dayna Beads work well. Sell them all the time with no complaints.

                          Just had a new tire put on my spoked 78 front rim with two stick ons, one fell off on the first ride! huge amount of bounce. Had them redo it with spoke weights, they're not going anywhere. I think maybe some of the clearcoat didn't allow a great stick??
