These fuel taps are problems. Pull the lines from the tap and if you have a small pipe you can put on the vacuum side suck (gently) and see if fuel comes out of the other side.

I'm not experienced on 250's but the principle is the same as for the bigger bikes.

My GS1000 tap failed went when I took the tank off too.

Put it on reserve? Then prime.

I agree, pull the tank again, fit a pipe onto the vacum fitting (small one) of the petcock and give a good suck, fuel should flow from the larger fitting, that will eliminate the petcock.
If no fuel comes out you have a petcock problem, while the tank is off, you may want to rotate the little screw until fuel flows, make a mental note, that is your prime positon, just remember where ON is again.
Which gets me thinking, if the sucking on the pipe does not deliver fuel, try turning the little screw until it does star to flow.
is there any way at all that the screw could have been turned inadvertantly? maybe by someone while you were not in the garage, just exploring all possibilities?

Do you have a reserve bottle or another working fuel tank from another bike that you can jury rig up to this bike and make sure that it runs with fuel elimintating carb problems?

            gonna try sucking lol

I didnt adjust the valves, there were all dead on .005" . The reason my bike was leaking was the previous owner had the valves adjusted and carbs rebuilt and new carb boots and the shop he took it too didnt replace the valve cover gasket they just put it back on with the old gasket. I talked to the PO yesterday and he said now that he thinks about it thats when it started leaking oil right after he had the valves adjusted.

I am going to take the tank off and try sucking on the vacumn line while trying different positions of the screw on the petcock. I have to go to town now so I will let you know what happens later and I cannot thank you guys enough for all the input, Jerry

Fixed thanks to you wonderful people

Fixed thanks so much to you all How I fixed it:

Took tank off again (seven hundereth time lol) set on the bench and sucked on the vacumn line, gas flowed freely Put back on the bike, still no go.

Took the vacumn line off the petcock, sucked on it with my mouth while cranking it over, FIRED RIGHT UP.

Hooked vacumn line back up, started it 3 times NP. ITS FIXED

I want to thank all of you, how in the world would I have figured out to pull a vacumn line off and suck on it to fix it, LOL.

I am so happy, fixed the oil leak, changed valve cover gasket, cam seals, and changed spark plugs for 40 BUCKS, thanks to you guys and EBAY, lol.

I do have one more question please,

When I had the tank off, I sucked on the vacumn line and the fuel flowed no matter where the screw in the petcock was turned. I dont understand what the screw does, it didnt let the fuel flow without vacumn in any position, which is what I would assume is what is supposed to happen in prime mode. So does anyone know for sure which way the screw should be turned for normal operation? Seems weird to me there are no markings on the petcock to tell you.

                  Thanks again so much, Jerry

This is the petcock I suspect you have. The brass screw is used to set in prime mode. It is in run mode currently, which is done by turning the screw clockwise until it stops.

                      nope

nope, tyvm for taking the time to take the picture charlie but that's not what I have. Mine has no lever at all and just a tiny inset screw where the lever should be. I wish I had a camera or I would take a pic and post it. From what I hear here it is only found on the 1980 model. I got her goin, the petcock works np no matter where I turn the screw, the petcock doesn't stick down hardly at all from the tank and has no marks or writing on it to determine prime, on, or off and no matter where I turn the screw it doesnt change a thing. I am just wondering if it even matters where the screw is. Thanks again for the help, Jerry

Thats the same tap as on my GS1000E from 1981. A PITA if you ask me. By the way you've got it on prime in that position than run which is horizontal, but hey were not splitting hairs here.

Sounds like you need a new tap.....

I was thinking you should get a new one as well.
