    question about front forks gs550

    So, I ordered new seals for my 550 (1977) front forks. Took off acorn nut, took springs out, Took off dust boot, removed seal spring. Loosened the allen bolt @ bottom of shock kept on turning it, but it never came out all the way (is it supposed to?) I still can't separate the 2 pieces (tubes), in fact they are kind of stuck together now. I looked @ my downloaded manual, and they show a front fork assembly tool inserted in the tube opposite the allen bolt. What is that tool like?

          basscliff, I checked your site, but that was for air shocks. Mine aren't. Had no problem cracking the allen bolt, but now I realized I don't have to take them apart that far. I'm digging out the old ones, but after digging thru the rubber, there appears to be a metal ring then, can't dig thru that.
          Suggestions anyone

            Not sure what the air forks have to do with anything besides the cap

            There are bushings in there which basically need to be slide-hammered out with the fork uppers. That is IF you're going to take the whole fork apart. Of course now that you've cracked the bolt at the bottom, you might as well just keep going. Never know what junk you'll find down there.

            To expand on my earlier post, I and many other members have had great success on the smaller forks by jamming a wooden broom handle down the fork to get the bolt out.

              You mean to tell me, that there are people who Dont completely dissasemble the entire fork when changing seals for the first time?

              I couldn't even see the bottom of my forks, when I looked inside.
              There was so much gunk.
