    what are the cylinder numbers?

Adjusting valves on my 83 gs550e valve dohc and have a terrible manual. Inside the cover i see letters a, b, c, and d. Are they the same as cylinders 1 2 3 and 4? Which is inlet and which is exhaust?

Oh. Never mind about in and out. Can figure that out once the cylinders are numbered!

when sitting on the bike, the cylinders from left to right are numbered 1-4.

The inlet side is the side closest to the carbs, the exhaust side is the side closest to the exhaust pipes...

The letters on the cam journals are there so you dont mix them up if you remove them - they wear specific to that cam area. You do not have to remove them to adjust your valves.

My guess would be that the intakes are the ones close to the carbs and the exhausts are the ones close to the HOT pipes.

As far as numbering, they are numbered from left to right, as you sit on the bike.

That means that #1 is under your clutch hand, #4 is under your throttle hand.
