1979 GS 750 cant keep motor running HELP

Hello. I just purchased a 750 and the electronics are touchy but i finally got everything running current. She didn't want to start so i gave her a shot of starting fluid spray and she started up and ran for about 50 seconds and backfired a few times i think due to gas in the exhaust and then died. She started up for about 10 seconds then died. I gave here another few shots of starting fluid and she started up and lasted about 5-10 seconds. Any suggestions?

First, get rid of the starting fluid - in fact, give it to your friend and tell him to get rid of it.

Secondly, remove your carbs and clean them properly based on the tutorial Nessism recently added to Basscliff's site. You'll need new orings from www.cycleorings.com and Berryman's dip from your local parts house. Get the gallon can that has the dip tray inside of it.

Thirdly, read through Basscliff's site and follow all of the maintenance advice given there.

Finally, put your location in your profile, maybe one of us is close by to help out.

      You likely have 3 problems

      1. Dirty carbs
      2. Need new points and condensors
      3. Need to read BassCliff's site

I'm curious, do you think that posting the same problems multiple times will get you some easy answer? You need to go thru everything systematically to determine a baseline and be sure all the maintenance is done

        Are the spark plugs good?
Old gas in carbs or tank?

Do NOT keep using starter fluid!
If the bike won't stay running, ether WONT help!!!
It's job is to force an engine to start...not keep it running.

So you likely need to tear down the carbs, change plugs, etc.
