You can download a service manual for free from Cliff's website... http://members.dslextreme.com/users/bikecliff/
If you are changing the oil diesel engine oil is recommended.
Hope you are keeping up on the bikes other maintenance as well as oil changes. Valve adjustment is particularly critical or the engine will be damaged.Ed
To measure is to know.

Since you are obiously new to motorcycles, the bottom rear corner of the clutch cover is near your right foot, while you are on the bike.

do as the others have said. but also make sure you havent rode it within the last 10 minutes or so. oil tends to seem low after a ride. let it settle.

If it's on centerstand and you don't see oil level, it might be slightly over the sight glass; just put it on kickstand for 30 seconds and then swing bike back up to level- you should see oil rise in window.1981 gs650L

You can also do it without the centerstand, although I don't recommend it if you're not used to the weight and tipping point of your bike.
