Just picked up some old GS1000 exhausts. Has decent amounts of rust; not sure extent of pitting yet. Need suggestions on best way to derust and restore. Thanks!

whatever you do, DO NOT use a green dish scrubbie. Most rust will come off with some 000 or 0000 steel wool soaked in wd 40. Semichrome chrome polish after the heavy stuff has been dealt with.MY BIKES..1977 GS 750 B, 1978 GS 1000 C (X2)

Spray on the wd and soak the steel wool..wd cuts the rust pretty handily.MY BIKES..1977 GS 750 B, 1978 GS 1000 C (X2)

No aluminum foil. It scratches the chrome.
Chrome cleaner on a cotton cloth, and mucho elbow grease.Ed

I use a product called ZUD, it's similiar to Comet only it has oxaylic acid in it. Get some 0000 steel wool, wet it and sprinkle on some ZUD and go to town. It works a bit better if you let it sit for a few minutes before some light scrubbing. I've done two exhausts in this manner and it's a bit surprising how well it works.Larry D

If you use a cleanser like Zud or Comet or Bbar Keepers Friends..try it on a place that will not show on the bike. Be sure the abrasive doesntb scratch.MY BIKES..1977 GS 750 B, 1978 GS 1000 C (X2)

and steel wool doesn't scratch it???? I believe aluminum is the lesser of 2 evils as it's much softer than steel
My pipes were so bad that just a cloth wasn't cutting it!82 GS1100E
five asses because it's far superior to having just four!
