Oil Level Issue
My 83 1100 has a lockhart aftermarket oil cooler. I keep the oil level near the top line of the window. My question is with the bike running (pumping oil up to the oil cooler) do you end up with a low oil level in the engine? Is their a rule of thumb like add 1\4 qt or 1\2 qt etc?Tags: None

I don't know if this would work, but what about running the bike when cold and then abruptly pinching off the oil hoses at the same time the engine is shut off? A helper would be needed for this. Oil would be trapped in the oil cooler system but drain down otherwise. Let the engine sit for a couple of mins. and then read the level.Ed

I could fill one and measure how much it holds if you desire.

Hey has anybody bought a new oil cooler lately, and did the instructions say to add extra oil to compensate for the cooler capacity? if so how much ? Thanks

Even if you know how much extra to add, that won't do you any good day to day since the engine is likely to burn some oil as you ride.Ed

I have an OEM 1150 cooler on my bike. I keep the oil level at the Full mark and have never had any problem. And yes, I do check it religiously and top off as required.

I have a cooler too, and just keep the oil to the Full Line or a hair over.
Because after running Low Twice...I'm not taking any chances.
Usually I'll keep a half a quart in my saddle bags at all times.
That's the strange thing I've noticed with all of my GS'es.
They will maintain proper oil levels, but the DAY you let you're guard down and don't check, is the same day your engine decides to **** half a quart mysteriously!
Don't remember how much extra I added....maybe 1/4 quart or so?
Depends on the motor size and cooler size.Last edited by Guest; 10-23-2011, 09:55 PM.
