Less than 5 miles at a time? No oil will do well with that schedule.

Yeah, that is gonna be tough on the oil. The engine is not getting hot enough to remove the condensation inside the engine cases. May sound a bit odd, but that is the way it works.

I don't think I would ever change my oil, if I were riding that short distance!

            Have fun!

Obgrayone... A good 10w-40w, or whatever you may be using, is probably fine for your purposes. If you really want to get tricky, you can do a search and find out more about oil than you'll ever care to know. Oh, and remind your wife to be careful!

thanx for all the input.it must suck having to work more than a five min. from home but we choose to live that close to work. I did have a hr and a half comute to work each day and it sucked sitting in traffic three hrs a day.yes theres a lot of oil questions on here but everything related to anything needed done on here has been asked many times.at least she is out riding

When I lived that close to work, I rode the 8-10 miles TO WORK and the 100-150 miles TO HOME.

                  Walk to work.
                  Ride on weekends.
Change the oil when it needs it.
                  Easy stuff.

obgrayone, the issue with that short of a ride is condensation in the crankcase. The engine does not get warm enough to let it evaporate. Just watch the color and look of the oil. When it starts to look different, change it. Or once a year, whichever comes first.
The most highly recommended oil for bikes is a diesel grade 15W-40. I use Rotella T. It is a bit more expensive than other oils, but at the low frequency which you will be changing it you won't notice.

                      Hi,

Rotella 15w40 diesel oil (or any other diesel engine oil). That's the best stuff you can use. And yes, take it out for a good long ride a few times a week, at least 30 minutes or so. It's fun!

                      Thank you for your indulgence,

                      BassCliff

Ha! I live 3.5 miles from work. The ride home is a bit longer, maybe 30 miles or so.
