The Tune Up Has Begun! with pics

For those of you that didn't see my intro or my bike here is the link:

I've finally got ALL of the electrical bugs worked out to include installing a new indicator panel (due to the old one being hacked up by the P/O). Phew! Glad thats behind me. I also cleaned up the fuse block, which helped immensely. It appears that the light for 3rd gear is burnt out as t is getting power to the 3rd gear wire, but I can live with this one.

I've moved on to removing the valve cover in preparations to doing the valve adjustment. I'm waiting on my tappet set and new valve cover gasket to arrive.

I pulled the plugs to see what they looked like in their current state. Not bad looking. Maybe slight signs of a lean mixture. What do u think? I have new NGKs waiting to be installed after my tune up.

It looks as if the previous owner removed the stock air filter assembly? Am I correct, anyone have a spare set up? The air box is still there, but the two middle boots to the box are missing their clamps. My intake boots are still rubbery feeling so I'm hoping they are still good. We will see when I pull the carbs.

I've ordered o-rings for my carb cleaning, which is next on the list after I finish up the valve adjustment. I also have the oil pan removed right now due to the gasket leaking. I'm going to do the oil pressure mod with the washers while I've got it opened up. Any thing else I should be looking at while I've got her ripped back open?

Luckily it has cooled back down here for a few days so my anxiousness to ride has subsided for now.

Get those autolite plugs outa there! junk. Champion are worse. NGK D8es.

The one on the left looks like it might have some oil on it. Overall though they don't look horribly lean. Grey is ok. It's hard to get the "golden tan" colour many of us are accustomed to seeing now days because of the ethanol in almost all gasoline...

I have some NGKs in the waiting. I left my petcock on prime a few days ago and my carbs flooded, which introduced gas into my cylinders. I think thats why that plug looks wet. The oil definitely had a gas oder when I drained it today.

You're missing the back half of the airbox. The engine will run lean like that unless it's been rejetted.

I figured this was the case. Guess I'm on the hunt for yet another part then.

I've got NGKs now. I did the valve adjustment last night and it seems that this had been done by the P/O. The valve cover was very easy to remove and all the valves were in spec. Only one valve was just a little tight, I adjusted it just so I could feel like I did something .

I also got some new super bike bars put on her last night too. Makes it look like a whole different bike. I'll post pics soon. Gotta get washers for the oil pressure mod and I'll have her back up and running this weekend.

Hopefully I'll get to the carb cleaning within the next couple of weeks.

Took her for a test run tonight. The bike is running great! I've also got an air filter box on its way.

Well after having the bike in piece for about 2 weeks, I have finally finished dipping the carbs. I finished the re-install yesterday and took her for a test spin.

I thought the bike ran fine before hand, now I think the bike runs fantastic! It runs so much smoother, quieter, shifts better, and idles lower. Installing the airbox, new boots, and dipping the carbs has made a tremdendous difference.

My carbs still overflow with the bike off due to a bad petcock and float heights needing adjusting. I installed a manual shut-off inline so that I can still ride the bike in its current condition. I will be ordering a petcock and lining the tank as soon as I start getting some overtime cash.

Just wanted to bask in my own glory for a minute!

P.S. I also installed new sleek turn signals and a bar end mirror. Looking and running like a whole new beast!

Make sure that overflowing fuel is not creeping into the oil. If you oil level rises or smells like gas, change the oil and filter before starting that engine.

Yeap, I've been through 3 oil changes w/ this thing. I've probably only rode 20 miles thus far.
