Gs1000h front fork free length

Guys, reckoned my newly aquired Gs1000H uk model was sitting a bit low on the front,took forks apart and found were assembled incorrectly.measured free length of springs when out and found to be 14inches? service book says 16 plus?,also have filled forks to within 5.5 inches from top when fully compressed with 11psi of air.....Any advice please..Paul J

What year 1000? I have the old springs that I pulled out of '78, '79 and '81 models that I could measure for you.

Fear not Paul - your springs haven't shrunk by 3 inches. The book of words says 16.6 inches for a GS1000 unless.......it's a GS1000S in which case those springs should be 13.8 (351mm) inches long. Service limit is 13.6 inches (346mm)

There is no way the longer springs would shrink so much. You need to make sure that you have the spacer in there and as long as you are above the service limit then you're good to go.

Thanks Hog seems i must have Gs1000s springs in then! this model is the 78 uk Gs1000H cast wheels jobby,would you advise fitting the standard springs? leaving well alone or fitting progressives? Paul j

I would leave the S springs in there and make up a spacer so that you can set the static sag to suit. That way you can do away with having to use air pressure.

Good idea, need to make up some spacers then!!! Thanks for your advice Paul J....Ps Any advice on making the aforesaid spacers and setting the sag?
