About to start 630-530 conversion
Okay got my parts in for my 630 to 530 conversion. I'll be using a 18 tooth countershaft sprocket and 49 in the rear which gives me a ratio of 2.72 which dang close to stock. Question is, when I took off the old countershaft I noticed it had 6 mm space behind it, Z1 says to use the 6mm in front with the 530. I also ordered 3- 1.25mm spacers for the back to get the right space between the sprocket and the case. Are these spacers gonna be necessary? I did see the spacer that slides into the seal and was just wondering since it does stick out past the case.sigpicMrBill Been a GSR member on and off since April 2002

You know, I JUST did that conversion and had the same question as I was doing mine. I put the 6mm spacer on the outside, and suddenly nothing would line up. I could have put the nut on, but then the lock washer that folds over it wouldn't fit. I left the 6mm off and installed it like it was stock. I haven't noticed anything off. Chain rides fine, not rubbing guard or tire, it's not binding. I'm going to keep an eye on it for any strange wear, but honestly, I'm wondering why the 6mm spacer now... Someone educate us both please!

Funny, I just put my wheels and 530 chain on today. I bought the front sprocket from Katman the rear sprocket and chain from Z1. Only thing is the alignments off. I'm thinking of turning the front around and seeing if it will get better.

I didn't use any spacers on my 78 750 either...everything just lined up fine.
Seems like some models need the spacers, and some don't.
I also had 18/49 sprockets.

on the 750 kicker engines no spacer is necessary for the 530 conversion, although I have noticed a bit of wear on the outside of the front sprocket. might need a shim for the rear. idk looking into it right now for myself.
from what I have read the tscc (16v) do need a spacer as do the 1k 8v engines. but I could be wrong as I dont have any experience with either of those.

Hmmm all kinds of things going with this it looks like. When I took the old front sprocket off it did have a 6mm spacer behind it. I can see where if the 6mm spacer is on the front there would be a problem for the nut lock working, matter of fact it won't. Kind of looks like Z1 may have that advice on the 6mm spacer wrong? Who else is out there that has done this conversion so far Trevor? Where ya at lol.

Sorry, but I have no input on this. I do however have to ask why everybody is going to a 530 setup? 630 is bigger and stronger. No?
Just very curious...'83 GS 1100T

No, 630 is old tech, you can get 530 stuff that is lighter and it is just as or even stronger now. 530 is easier to find, just walk into any John Deere dealer and you can find 530 chains. 630 chains and sprockets are heavy, less unsprung weight with the 530 set ups and cheaper to boot. The cost of one 630 chain will just about pay for the whole 530 conversion.

Thank you for the education. I will consider it when it comes time to change mine. Its not very old and the sprockets are in like new condition. Anything to lighten these tanks is enough reason for upgrades... lol'83 GS 1100T
