    Valve Adjustment

    Okay, So I have no clue when/if this was done last.. but I am thinking I should so a valve adjustment on my bike. (82 gs650g)
    Also the manual has a section on how to check "Tappet Clearance", is that the same thing?

    Is there anything special I am going to need to buy, or order to get this done, or is this something simple?

    Total newbie with this stuff, but I have read around these forums about how things can eventually get pretty screwed up if you don't do all these basic checks.

    Thanks,

    Trevor

    Yea it's the same. I would check out basscliffs website. It helped me out a lot.

      Hi,

      You will use the 8 valve procedure. It is exactly the same for the 650 and the 850. Read through the entire procedure and the addendum. You'll need a metric feeler gauge, a tappet tool, and some replacement shims. Take measurements of your clearances and inventory your shims. Join the Shim Club (see the Services section) if you'd like to trade for replacements. Do not turn the motor if there are any shims missing. You will damage the cam lobes.

      Thank you for your indulgence,

        Alright, so seems like this may be more than just a one day project, because of probably needing different shims?

        I guess I will wait a week or so to do it anyways since my brother is going to be in town and can help me than.

        I will update on this thread when I am ready to give it a try, and will probably be looking into trading shims through the shim club that you mentioned.

        Thanks =)
