Done a real stupid thing!

I have been replacing the ball bearing set up on the headstock of my 1978 GS550 with taper set up......and mixed up the two taper bearing shells, putting the top one in the bottom and vice versa, yes, I know, what a dick! I thought I had made sure which was which. Problem is, I cant get them out now, as there is no recess to hit them from underneath, once they're in, they're in! Bollox!

Any ideas, apart from leave it to a professional in future? this is such a screw up and its not like I'm new to this sort of thing, bike fettling, not screwing up I mean.

If I understand what you are saying, and you have access to a wire-feed welder, just weld a bead inside the lower race and it will fall out.
Buy a new correct one to replace it or perhaps you can save the top one when you pull it and install it there.
Buy a new correct top one.
Install them in the correct locations and you should be good.

Thanks, luckily I managed to borrow some blind bearing pullers and they came straight out, phew
