Carbs leak through over flow
When parked after riding, carbs tend to leak through over flow, I'm guessing it's a floater issue? It's not a big leak but nonetheless a leakTags: None

78-79 had different carbs and petcock from the '80.
Did you leave your bike parked with the petcock on prime?
Sidestand or Centerstand?sigpic

I believe the longer end is the "pointer" and therefore that would be prime..try turning it 180 so its pointing to the front of the bike..If it goes then that would most likely be reserve..thus straight up and down would be ON. As for whats leaking..could also be the bowl gaskets and gas will run to the lowest point before dripping. Get a good trouble light and wipe each carb down and look at the gaskets to see any new weeping. Also look closely at the fuel tee and the transfer tubes. If you have hoses on them and the outside of them are dry but it drips out the hose, then that would tell me its a float height being just a tad too low..raise it up 1MM and then see what happens. While your in there, take a Qtip and some laquer thinner and swab out the float needle seat too..a little build up on them will cause leakage as well.MY BIKES..1977 GS 750 B, 1978 GS 1000 C (X2)
1978 GS 1000 E, 1979 GS 1000 S, 1973 Yamaha TX 750, 1977 Kawasaki KZ 650B1, 1975 Honda GL1000 Goldwing, 1983 CB 650SC Nighthawk, 1972 Honda CB 350K4, 74 Honda CB550

I would rather trust my bike to a "QUACK" that KNOWS how to fix it rather than a book worm that THINKS HE KNOWS how to fix it.

My question would be: why does your '79 bike have the "dreaded '80 petcock"?

That petcock came on the 1980 bikes, but at least one person here said their '79 GS1000 came with one also. Maybe Suzuki made a late production change over? What is the manufacturing month of this bike?Ed

Carbs leak through over flow
I have a 1979 GS-850G that I just finished with a complete top end, carb rebuild, and Dyna Electronic Ignition job. Runs great, BUT it appears I need to rebuild the petcock as well. It spits gas back out through the over flow tubes two or three times after shut off. Does that sound like a petcock problem? What is the Dreaded 80's Petcock problem? Is that what I might have? What the recommended solution?
ALSO, I replaced my starter while I had the carbs off and now - even before - it just clicks sometimes and other times it kicks right in when I hit the button. Could this be my button is in need of repair, cleaning, or replacement? Other possibilities?
