Starter replacement help
So I have a 1980 Gs550e I am trying to replace the starter on and have hit a few snags. I was hoping there is already a tread about how to do it or maybe someone has some advice? Any help would be great thank you.Tags: None

Take off the cover, take off the power cable, pull 2 bolts, slide it back and out

Before you go purchase a new one, I suggest removing the old one and disassembling it. Many can be rebuilt good as new for a lot less than a new one.

Go here and download a manual
Then tell us why you need a new starter, all the symptoms, please
As noted above, the starter gets gummed up over time and often needs a good cleaning. Be careful with the long bolts, use an impact driver after the penetrating oil1978 GS 1000 (since new)

Screw on back end of cover.
Two bolts thru back end of starter. Kinda hard to get at since down into the cavity the starter is mounted into.
Lift backend up a bit and pull out. Is just held in place by tight fitting seal around front end of starter.
BOlts to take apart starter?
Two.
Check out Stocker Starters for rebuilt starters.
They also have brush kits, which is problaby as much as you will need.
Need to see if you have the Denso starter or the Matusba (spelling?) starter to know wheich brush kit to get.
And, ya, why do you think need to work on starter?
